Receiving an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) referral for your child can feel overwhelming, but you're not alone.
ABA therapy is an evidence-based approach that can provide meaningful support for your child's development and behavior. To help you get started, here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do next.
1️⃣ Empower Yourself and Understand the Referral
Before moving forward, empower yourself first. Take time to understand the reasons behind the referral.
Spend as much time as it takes on Google to understand the following questions:
Why was ABA recommended?
What specific concerns or goals were identified?
How can ABA help my child?
💪 There should never be a time where you say "I don't know..." The information you receive from doing your own research is free and will help you make the right decisions for your family.
2️⃣ Fully Research ABA Providers
When you receive a referral, you most likely will receive a long list of Agencies that are in-network.
When beginning to pick up the phone. research the Agency. Go onto their website and take a look around. It's important to find one that aligns with your family’s values and your child’s needs and have the key words that make you feel confident in their mission and background.
Credentials: I look for agencies that are owned and operated by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). This means they are being run according to a very strict Code of Ethics and are ensuring the appropriate quality checks.
Approach: Ask about their treatment philosophy and how they involve families.
Experience: Check if they have experience working with children of your child’s age and needs.
Reviews: Read testimonials or ask for references from other parents.
These are the people who will be responsible for putting someone in your home and engage with your child. Know before you buy.
2️⃣ In Network Providers
ABA therapy can be costly. Although many insurance plans cover it, contact your insurance provider and ask:
What are my out-of-pocket costs?
What are my co-pays?
Make sure you you budget the cost so that you can avoid interruptions and maintain therapy.
Taking the first steps after an ABA referral may seem daunting, but with the right information and support, you can confidently guide your child through the process. Remember, ABA therapy is a a long long journey and your role as a parent is invaluable in helping your child reach their full potential.
