As a specialist in pediatric behavior, I’m here to share key insights that can help you and your young person empower, adapt, and thrive. Here’s what you need to know-
Preparation isn’t just about being ready; it’s about setting yourself and your young person up for success. Without preparation, we’re left reacting to problems instead of preventing them.Think of preparation as building a safety net. When challenges arise—and they will—your pre-planned strategies and routines catch the chaos before it escalates. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being ready to respond with clarity and confidence.
⚡️ Challenging Behavior Readiness: 10 Essential Questions ⚡️
Do I have 3-5 family rules that reflect my family values?
Can my family rules be worded in simple terms (7 words or less)?
Are great and negative consequences pre-planned?
Do I deliver consequences to my young person? fairly, consistently, and promptly?
Am I providing opportunities for my young person to learn, practice, and demonstrate expectations?
Do I give my young person specific action-powered praise more than corrective critiques?
Am I modeling the behaviors and attitudes I expect from my young person?
When problem behavior becomes more interfering, do I have frequent communication with my support person?
What would happen if I ... shined a bright light on good behavior?
Do I take time to reflect on and adjust my strategies based on what’s working and what’s not?
✨ So, create rules, plan those consequences, and practice those positive interactions. A prepared adult does just manage behavior—they shape it. And that’s where the magic happens ✨
